Laptop Won't Turn On? Here's What to Do

A laptop that won't start can mean anything from a dead charger to a failed part, and the files on it are usually still safe. Try the safe checks below first. If it still won't start, I'll diagnose it at your home or office and give you a firm quote before any repair.

First: What Exactly Happens?

Safe Checks You Can Try

  1. Different outlet and charger: check the charger light, and try another compatible charger if you have one.
  2. Hard reset: unplug the charger, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. On older laptops with a removable battery, take the battery out first. Then plug in and try again.
  3. External monitor: rules the screen in or out.
  4. Watch for blink codes or beeps: many HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops flash the caps-lock or power light in a pattern, or beep, to report a fault. Note the pattern; it speeds up the diagnosis.
  5. Let it charge for 30 minutes: a fully drained battery sometimes needs time before the laptop will start.

Don't keep trying if the laptop got wet, smells burnt, or the battery is swollen. Unplug it and book a diagnosis; repeated attempts can turn a repairable problem into a dead board.

Your Files Are Usually Safe

When a laptop won't turn on, the drive holding your files is usually fine. Even if the laptop isn't worth repairing, the files can almost always be copied off and moved to your next computer. See data recovery and new computer setup and file transfer.

How I Diagnose and Fix It

  1. Test the power path: charger, port, battery, and power to the board.
  2. Test the parts: memory, screen and backlight, drive.
  3. Firm quote: what failed, what it costs, and whether it's worth it on this laptop.
  4. Repair: at your location where possible. Common fixes: battery, charging port or charger, memory, screen.

If it isn't worth repairing, I'll say so, recover your files, and help you set up a replacement.

What Customers Say

“Stephane absolutely saved my bacon and my data on my dead laptop. He also was able to provide me with a back up computer and I was able to complete a on line course that I was 93 percent complete and fairly desperate to finish, as a deadline loomed. Super grateful and highly recommended.”

Frequently Asked Questions

With no lights or fan, the usual causes are the charger, the battery, the charging port or a power fault on the motherboard. Try another outlet, a hard reset (unplug, hold power 30 seconds) and another charger first.

Connect an external monitor. If you get a picture, the screen or its backlight has failed. If not, it may be memory or a startup fault that needs testing.

Almost always. The drive is usually undamaged, and the files can be copied off even if the laptop isn't worth repairing.

No. Unplug it, don't charge it, and book a diagnosis. Powering a wet laptop can short the board.

Yes. I diagnose at your home or office and fix it there when the part is in hand, or come back with it after quoting.

Often, when it's the charger, battery, port, memory or screen. If the motherboard has failed on an older laptop, I'll tell you honestly and help you replace it instead.
