Common Desktop Problems and What Usually Causes Them

Safe Checks Before You Book

If those don't solve it, the problem is inside the case, which is where I come in.

Why Desktops Are Worth Fixing

Desktops are built from standard parts. A power supply, drive, RAM stick, fan or graphics card can be swapped individually, so one failed part rarely means a new computer. You keep your files, your programs and your setup exactly as they were.

Replacement makes more sense when several parts are failing at once, or when an older PC can't run Windows 11 and Windows 10 no longer gets security updates. I'll tell you honestly which side of that line your computer is on. More on that decision: reinstall Windows or buy a new computer?

Gaming PCs and Custom Builds

Crashes in games, graphics glitches, a PC that won't POST after a new part, a power supply too small for a new graphics card, or temperatures climbing under load: I diagnose gaming and custom-built PCs at your desk, component by component. Planning an upgrade or a new build instead? See gaming PC repair and upgrades and custom PC builds.

How a Desktop Repair Visit Works

  1. Tell me the symptoms by phone, email or the form, including any beeps, lights or error messages.
  2. I diagnose it at your desk with test equipment, instead of guessing.
  3. You get a firm quote before any repair. Common parts come with me; if a specific part has to be ordered, you get the price first and I come back to install it.
  4. I repair and test it with you, and explain what failed and why.

No fix, no fee. Your files stay on your computer, in your home.

Desktops I Work On

Dell OptiPlex, Inspiron and XPS towers, HP Pavilion, EliteDesk and ProDesk, Lenovo ThinkCentre and IdeaCentre, Acer and ASUS desktops, small-form-factor office PCs, custom and gaming towers, and all-in-ones from HP, Dell, Lenovo and Apple. All-in-ones are built more like laptops, so some repairs take longer; I'll tell you up front.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most desktop repairs happen at your home or office, at your desk: diagnosis, part replacement, cleaning and testing. If a specific part has to be ordered, you get a firm price first and I come back to install it.

Usually, if one or two parts have failed: power supplies, drives, RAM and fans are standard and swappable. It makes less sense if several parts are failing or the PC can't run Windows 11, since Windows 10 no longer gets security updates. I'll tell you honestly which applies.

Check that the monitor is on the right input and plugged into the graphics card if you have one. If that's fine, the usual causes are a loose or failed RAM stick, a graphics card fault or a motherboard problem, which I can test on site.

Hardware repairs like a power supply, fan or RAM don't touch your files. If the drive itself is failing, I copy your files off first, before anything else.

Yes. Crashes in games, graphics problems, overheating, undersized power supplies and builds that won't POST are all diagnosed component by component at your desk.
